Design Early Words was designed by teachers to ensure that it’s an application that is intuitive, engaging, and useable by children with minimal adult assistance. Ability levels Every set of sight words has been broken up into eight levels, enabling children to focus on learning words appropriate to their current ability. Gameplay Early Words features a single player game as well as a multiplayer option enabling collaborative or competitive gameplay between two children. Features Check out some of the great features of Early Words! #1 Single Player Mode Early Words has a fun and engaging single player memory match game that will teach children and keep them entertained for hours. The game has gold, silver and bronze trophies to collect and provide players a goal to work towards. #2 Multiplayer Mode Early Words also provides a multiplayer option allowing two people to play and learn simultaniously, providing great competitive or collaborative gameplay. Multiplayer mode also supports a horizontal screen view which is ideal for tablets. #3 Major Sight Word List Support Early Words enables parents and teachers the opportunity to choose from the most popular sight word lists for the game to use. These lists include Dolche, Fry, Oxford, Essential 100 and our own Early Words sight word list. #4 Approprite Ability Levels Each sight word list has been broken up into eight appropriate difficulty levels. This enables children to focus on learning sight words appropriate to their current ability, and gradually progress as their knowledge develops. #5 Audio Pronunciation Whenever a card is flipped over in Early Words, the audio feature pronounces the word on the card for the player. This enables children to link the visual shape of the word with the correct pronunciation. The audio feature can be toggled on or off from the options screen. #6 Curriculum Support Because Early Words was created by teachers, it has been designed around what children are actually taught in school today and targets specific curriculum outcomes. Teachers can use Early Words as a tool in the classroom to meet their outcomes, and parents can supplement their child’s education at home through use of Early Words. What are sight words? A sight word is a frequently occurring word whose spelling is not straight-forward. This means according to the basic phonetic rules, the word does not enable a learning reader to determine what spoken word it represents by sounding it out. In the first two years of schooling, children are taught sight words to help them become fluent readers. Learning just 100 of these high frequency sight words can enable students to decode one half of words in reading. How does Early Words help? Currently when teaching sight words in class or when helping your child at home learn sight words, they will need teacher or parent support. Early words enable students to develop their fluency in reading sight words through entertaining games, without the need for an adult explicitly teaching the words to them. The memory games exposes children to the the visual the shape of the words while simultaniously pairing them with the correct pronunciation, greatly assisting child development. The multiplayer option enables students to also engage with peers and play together in either a collaborative or competitive way. Can it be used in classrooms? Yes! Early Words is a fantastic application to use in the classroom, and was designed with this need in mind. It does not require teacher assistance to play and the word lists used are some of the popular ones used in Primary Schools (Oxford, Dolch, Fry and Essential 100). The difficulty levels are designed to cater to students of different ability levels. The multiplayer mode allows for a single device to be shared between 2 students, therefore during regular literacy/reading groups you would only need 2-3 devices. Which curriculum links does it target? Early Words has been designed to target areas in the Australian National Curriculum and NSW Syllabus. The specific curriculum links that are achieved through using Early Words are: Australian Curriculum: ACELA1778, ACELA1758, ACELY1649, ACELY1650. NSW Syllabus: ENe 4A, ENe 5A. Free Resources!
